Sterkfontein Dam, Lesotho, Streamworks and The new generation Beetle

Sterkfontein Dam
It’s time for an update, sorry no excuses, just lazy me. The year started off like a rocket with a lot of not so nice stuff that has happened during the month of January. Most of you know by now that our region encountered floods that were last seen 22 years ago. This had an enormous impact on fly fishing in the region, leaving (luckily) Sterkfontein Dam as the only worthwhile venue where you can cast a fly.  The conditions, was, however, difficult and some days one had to w...

Yellowfish Season/fever on Sterkfontein

Posted by Andre Burger on Monday, December 20, 2010, In : Yellowfish Season Updates
The last couple of weeks were crazy and so far we had an above average busy yellow fish season. It seems as if Sterkfontein has been discovered for the first time. Yellow fish flies are virtually flying out of the shop and we were unable to stay ahead of the endless demand for the “The Good Doctors’ Beetles”.  The ever popular annual TCFF event was as usual, a great success. Despite the weather conditions most participants managed to land a fish or two and returned home knowing that the...

Posted by Andre Burger on Monday, November 29, 2010, In : Facebook, new foam Hopper
Before I start, Present A Fly now has its own facebook page. Join us and feel free to post  comments and photos. This week we have the tying instructions of the Foam Hopper in our fly tying section. This is also the last pattern in Dr Hans Van Zyl’s series of flies for Sterkfontein Dam. Check it out, tie it and enjoy it. I am currently playing around and testing shortcut flies for the Yellows on Sterkfontein. With shortcut I mean flies that are very effective, simple and fast to tie. As soo...

The “Meneer” : another variant of the Good Doctor’s beetle and the arrival of the SAGE VXP and TXL-F

Posted by Andre Burger on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, In : Fly Tying
Another step by step version of a Sterkies favourite from the vice of Hans Van Zyl, the “Meneer”, in our fly tying section. It is similar to the original Beetle with added buoyancy and a set of legs instead of the usual hackle. Remember to refer to the original Beetle for preparation, a must have pattern for Sterkfontein.
The SAGE VXP. If you were a fan of the old XP, this one is a must have. With the R/$ currently in our favour, you can either upgrade now, or become a new member of the wo...

Fly Tying - The Good Doctor’s Beetle, and how to tie it

Posted by Andre Burger on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, In : Fly Tying
Everyone that regularly fishes Sterkfontein knows about Dr Hans van Zyl, designer of the famous “Good Doctor’s Beetle. Without a doubt, one of the best fish producing fly patterns on Sterkfontein in the past few years.  For those of you who don’t know Dr Hans, he is one of the fly fishermen that discovered fly fishing on Sterkfontein. A humble person who is always willing to assist a fellow fly fisherman and never hesitates to share his newly discovered secrets of Sterkfontein with othe...

Posted by Joe Lategan on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, In : 9.5kg Giant Largemouth Yellowfish caught in the Wilge River / Rivier
Nine kilo plus Monster on fly in the Free State Wilger River.
A local Eastern Free State fly fisherman, Paul Fick, has now proofed to everyone that one does not need highly specialised equipment, designer flies or far away destinations to land trophy large mouth monsters on the fly. With a passion for fly fishing, a good quality 5wt outfit (Sage XP rod and Sage reel with Scientific Anglers floating fly line), Rio 3x tippet and a self-tied fly (combination between a dragon, damsel and a bugger ...

Welcome to our Site and Blog

Posted by André Burger on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, In : Welcome to "Present a Fly"
For the past 13 years (That is how long the shop will be in business this year) I have browsed  the internet , checking out all the nice fly fishing sites globally, never trying to launch my own website because of my techno disability. Until John Wassenaar  from Catfish Joe Productions convinced me to do it. Well here we are, let’s do it!..... Thanks John and Joe.
With this site which is still in his early stages we intend to keep our loyal existing and new clients informed about products  ...
